Chapter Twenty-One

“So why won’t Wolf come to me now?”

“He’s mad at you for not letting him kill Zetara.”

Wolf was prancing just ahead of them. Since it was evening

most of the crew members, unless they had the night shift, were

in their private quarters or one of the recreation areas.

“So you think I should’ve let him kill her?”

“It was better than the alternative.” Angel muttered beneath

her breath.

“And what is that, Imnana?’’

“Having to see her ever again, and remember. Oh, what the

hell, what’s one more traumatic memory to group in with all the

others.” She hunched her shoulders, hands clasped in front of

her. She wished Wolf would let her hang onto his collar, at least

then she’d have something to do with her hands.

“You won’t see her any more than is necessary.”

“What precisely does that mean?”

“Let’s wait until we get to our quarters before we talk about

that. As Guylar said, some of the walls have ears.”

Angel nodded, whistling for Wolf to stay closer to her.

Another crew member turned the corner, and Angel could

tell by his blue accessories that he was a security officer. As they

passed him she felt the man’s eyes on her. Unwilling to appear

as though she was cowering she straightened her shoulders and

dared him with a look to say anything. I’m not going to hide from

Darek’s people, because despite the fact Dad is Larindon, they certainly

aren’t mine.

As she gazed into his eyes she had the thought that was more

feeling than anything else that his eyes weren’t quite right. For

what had to be only seconds the man’s face altered his head

becoming larger, and his eyes tilting and turning a horrible

opaque black. Her own widened and she had to stop herself

from screaming. Her lungs ceased to function and she was

gasping for air that felt as though it were being sucked out of the

hallway they were in. “No!” She croaked, falling to her knees.

From a distance she heard Darek say, “Imnana?”

Still seeing the Grey she fell back on her bottom and began

scooting backward like a crab. “No!” She called, her voice barely

there.

“What’s wrong with her, Commander?”

“I don’t know.” Angel felt more than saw him kneel next to

her stopping her backward slide. “I’m here Imnana, what’s

wrong, what do you see?”

“Grey!” She whispered loudly.

Darek put his arms around her, and whispered against her

hair. “Let me in.” She felt his mind gently push at hers, before

she allowed the barrier to fall. She knew that when he again

looked at the security officer he could see what she saw. He saw

the path her mind had taken, something about the security

officer had reminded her of something she’d seen in the past and

her mind was confusing the two.

“Imnana, it is a false image, your mind is confused.”

“What?”

“See what I see.”Angel felt him push aside the picture her

mind was projecting and showed her what the man really

looked like.

“He’s not a Grey, is he?” She put her face on her knees.

“Jesus, I had a flashback. I haven’t had one of those in a long

time.”

Wolf loped over and tried to insinuate himself between

Darek and Angel, even going so far as to bare his teeth at Darek.
